Guide To Support for Deaf Students

This interactive resource has been developed for students who are deaf, or have hearing loss, and the people who work with them.

Featuring contributions from students and professionals in Scottish Further Education colleges plus experts from organisations providing services to deaf people, the guide features information on a range of support options and technology.

Answering questions like:

  • Can I use an interpreter in an exam?
  • How can I get a radio aid?
  • Would using a note-taker be helpful to me?
  • Who can help me with my course work?

Designed to be optimally accessible to deaf users, the resource:

  • Is presented in British Sign Language by Deaf People
  • Contains printable information in plain English
  • Features interviews with real students
  • Shows relevant technology in use
  • Has interactive tools to help you organise the information useful to you
  • Acts as a portal to other sources of useful information

While this is a student-centred resource, it is also linked to a staff guide compiled by the group ‘Furthering Access to College Education for Deaf Students (FACE)’. The FACE guide includes lots of useful information for
teaching staff in schools and colleges on:

  • Preparing students for college
  • Creating an accessible learning environment
  • Technology to assist students
  • Using Communication Services

You don't have to access the whole guide at once. Pick out the sections that interest you most, or go through it gradually - dipping in and out as often as you like.

Using this Guide

To access information, select the topic you wish to know more about from either the text menu at the top of the page or the rollover menu in the centre of the screeen. If there is BSL signed video to accompany the section, it will start to play automatically after a short preload.

For those who will find it useful, there is an accompanying audio commentary to the video. Although the text of this commentary appears on screen, it is recommended that speakers or headphones be used.

Additionally, a printable version of each section is available in the Printable Transcripts area of the Resources section.

Although the guide can be viewed on slower connections, a DSL connection or greater is recommended. The guide is also optimised to work in Interner Explorer 5 or above.

The Personal Planner requires you to have a printer connected in order to print out and keep your responses.
